How to Get an EIN for Your Nonprofit (Step-by-Step)

Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is your nonprofit's federal tax ID — like a Social Security number for your organization. You need it to open a bank account, file taxes, hire employees, and apply for 501(c)(3) status.

The good news: getting an EIN is free, fast, and one of the easiest steps in the nonprofit startup process. This guide walks through every step of the online application, alternative filing methods, common mistakes, and what to do after you receive your number.

What Is an EIN?

An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a unique nine-digit number assigned by the IRS to identify your organization for tax purposes. The format is XX-XXXXXXX (e.g., 47-1234567).

You need an EIN to:

  • Open a business bank account
  • File IRS Form 1023 or 1023-EZ for tax-exempt status
  • File Form 990 (annual information return)
  • Hire employees and process payroll
  • Apply for state tax exemptions
  • Apply for grants (most require your EIN)
  • Accept donations (donors need it for tax records)

You do NOT need an EIN to:

  • Legal name of your organization (must exactly match your articles of incorporation)
  • State of incorporation and date incorporated
  • Mailing address for the organization

Step 1: Go to IRS.gov EIN Application

Step 3: Select your entity type

What to Do After Receiving Your EIN

Immediately

  2. Name mismatch — Your organization's name on the EIN application must exactly match the name on your articles of incorporation. Even minor differences (like "Inc." vs. "Incorporated") can cause problems.

  3. Using a third-party service — Some websites charge $50-200+ to file an EIN on your behalf. This is unnecessary — the IRS application is free and takes 10 minutes. Don't pay someone else to do it.

  4. Not saving the confirmation — If you close the browser before saving your EIN, you'll need to call the IRS to retrieve it (which can take weeks). Always print or screenshot the confirmation page.

  5. Applying for multiple EINs — Each organization gets one EIN. Don't apply again if you already have one. If you've lost your EIN, call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933.

  6. Wrong responsible party — The responsible party must be an individual with a valid SSN or ITIN. It cannot be the organization itself. Choose someone who will be available if the IRS needs to contact your organization.
