Step 1: Define Your Mission and Name
Write a clear mission statement that describes who you serve and what problem you solve.
Check name availability: Search the Indiana Secretary of State business name database to confirm your name isn't taken. Indiana requires your nonprofit corporation name to include a corporate designator like "Inc.," "Incorporated," or "Corporation."
Step 2: Recruit Your Board of Directors

Step 7: Apply for Indiana State Tax Exemption
Federal 501(c)(3) status does not automatically exempt you from Indiana taxes. Apply through the Indiana Department of Revenue for:
