Setting Up Your Organization

Quick Answer: Organization Setup

Open Settings at /settings and choose the Organization tab to enter your legal name, EIN, address, logo, and contact details. Organization settings are free on every plan and available to parent organization directors; fund directors with write access can set overrides for their own fund.

Where to Find Organization Settings

Organization details live in Settings, not the Administration menu. Click Settings in the sidebar (or go directly to /settings), then open the Organization tab. Parent organization directors can edit the master profile that appears on receipts, giving pages, and reports. Fund-level directors with write access can override specific fields for their fund while leaving blank fields to inherit from the parent.

Basic Information

  • Organization Name: Your nonprofit's legal name exactly as registered with the IRS. This appears on tax receipts and official documents.

  • EIN: Your nine-digit Employer Identification Number. Required for IRS-compliant donation receipts.

  • Address: Your physical mailing address for receipts and correspondence.

  • Phone Number: Primary contact number for your organization.

  • Description: A short summary donors may see on public giving pages.

  • Logo: Upload your logo for branding on receipts, donation pages, and the Donor Portal.

  • Social links: Optional website and social media URLs shown on donor-facing pages.

Fiscal Year and Regional Preferences

Fiscal year start month and day are configured in Fund Accounting → Chart of Accounts → Account Defaults. Time zone, date format, and currency format live under Settings → Preferences. Most nonprofits use a December 31 fiscal year end, but June 30 and September 30 are common alternatives. Your fiscal year determines how financial reports group transactions and when Month-End Close Checklist runs.

Changing your fiscal year after transactions are posted requires careful planning. Contact support before making that change if you already have gift or expense history in Alignmint.

Tax Receipt Settings

Donation receipts pull organization name, EIN, and address from these settings automatically. Configure receipt behavior—including thank-you messaging and auto-send rules—from Donor Hub tools and donation receipt settings. Accurate organization details here prevent rework when you send year-end statements.

Multi-Organization and Fiscal Sponsors

Enterprise plans support multiple organizations under one account. Each entity keeps its own chart of accounts, donor database, and financial reports while sponsor leaders retain a consolidated view. Fund-level overrides in Settings → Organization let each sponsored project show its own public name and logo without duplicating the parent EIN unless your compliance team requires it.

Who Can Edit What

  • Parent org directors: Full edit access to master organization details on all plans

  • Fund directors with write access: Can override fund-specific fields; blank fields inherit from the parent

  • Read-only users: See organization details but cannot save changes
