Messenger

Direct Messaging

The Messenger lets you send direct and group messages to anyone in your organization—right inside Alignmint. No need for Slack, Teams, or any separate chat app. Conversations, files, and notifications all live in the same platform where you manage your nonprofit's finances and operations.

Accessing Messenger

There are two ways to open Messenger:

  • Header Icon: Click the message icon in the top navigation bar. A dropdown shows your recent conversations with unread badges—click any conversation to reply inline without leaving your current page.
  • Full Page: Navigate to My Workspace → Messenger for the full-screen experience with sidebar navigation and expanded message threads.

Starting a Conversation

  1. Go to My Workspace → Messenger (or click the header message icon)
  2. Click the New Conversation button
  3. Search for the person you want to message
  4. Type your message and hit Send

For group conversations, select multiple recipients when creating a new conversation. Group chats are automatically named after the participants, or you can set a custom group name.

Key Features

  • Real-Time Messages: Messages appear instantly via real-time sync—no refreshing needed
  • File Sharing: Attach images, PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and more. Up to 5 files per message, 50MB each.
  • Emoji Reactions: React to any message with emoji (♥, 👍, 👎, 😂, 😮, 😢)—click a message bubble to pick a reaction
  • Group Conversations: Create group chats with multiple team members. Add or remove participants at any time from the settings icon.
  • Unread Badges: See unread message counts on the header icon and next to each conversation—updated in real time
  • Search: Find past conversations by name, group name, or message content
  • Mobile Friendly: Responsive layout that works on phones and tablets with a stacked view

Managing Group Conversations

  • Add Members: Click the settings (gear) icon in the message thread header to add new participants. When a direct conversation grows past two people, it automatically becomes a group conversation.
  • Remove Members: Click the remove button next to any participant's name in the member list
  • Leave a Conversation: Use the "Leave" option in the conversation list dropdown to remove yourself from a group chat
  • Group Names: Set a custom name for any group conversation, or let Alignmint auto-generate one from participant names

Who Can You Message?

Messaging permissions are scoped to your organization:

  • Organization Admins (directors, bookkeepers, assistants) can message anyone across all funds and child organizations
  • Fund Users can message people within their own fund plus parent organization admins

This ensures team members can always reach the people they work with while maintaining appropriate organizational boundaries.

Email Notifications

Optionally receive email alerts when you get new messages. Configure your preferences in Settings → Notifications → Workspace Messages:

  • Direct Messages: Email alerts for 1:1 conversations (on by default)
  • Group Messages: Email alerts for group conversations (off by default)
  • Delay: Set a wait time (1–30 minutes) before the email is sent—if you read the message in-app during the delay, no email is sent

Email notifications include a "View in Messenger" button that takes you directly to the conversation.

Availability

Messenger is available on Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans. All plan users get unlimited messages and conversations.
